Willingness to play

Human conditions #2: The racing mind

The unstoppable functioning of the mind is one of those things which I wonder whether every human being experiences in the same way.

The mind is like a river that flows constantly, while changing its speed and depth all the time, though never stopping. I assume this is the universal human experience.

But how does that feel for you?

For me, it is a constant battle between trying to slow down and trying to accept how my brain works.

Between the constant pre- and post-processing of every piece of event, sensory input, memory or plan, and the naive attempts at staying at the present time without forcing, mindfulness or whatever we call it in that decade.

Between observing the river with fascination, and the exhausted longing for quiet.

At times it feel like playing whack-a-mole, chasing the calmness, causing the body to get restless somewhere else. Bringing the fidgety fingers to ease, only to realize that the mind has already drafted away, planning what how to frame a sentence perfectly, in an imaginary dialog that will never occur.
