The most anxious I've felt in my life were always the times where I was not in control of what's happening in my life.

Heteronomous. adjective being under the control, rule, or law of an outside force rather than autonomy or the self.

There is something about losing the tiny amount of control you had on certain parts of your life that makes you feel like it's not worth pursuing things anymore. In reality, the control you have over things may have been reduced from 1.5% to 1.2%. But the illusion of control seems to be what helps us plan for things, pursue them, and feel joy.
